10. LEADERS OF INDUSTRY CONFERENCE 2007 - Key Theme

Each year the EIIL asks for the opinion of 'leaders of industry' on a key question or trend
which is of interest to the EIIL stakeholder community & which we as Europeans should
be addressing.

The 2007 Leaders of Industry Conference is to be held in Brussels on March 19th and will
address the key themed question of this survey:

Given the projected shortage of engineers and technical professionals in Europe in the
coming decade, what is industry’s position on the impact of this on European competitiveness
and what are it’s actions and responsibility to address this?

At the conference guest speakers from international high schools, universities, government
representation, professional associations and industry leaders will illustrate and identify what
each can do to stimulate the numbers of engineers and technical professionals entering the
professions in order to drive the innovative solutions to European and global challenges
of the next generation.

The preliminary conclusions in response to the following questions will be presented at
the conference.

Projected Shortage of engineers, Scientists and Technical Professionals

"Local, National and Regional Governments across Europe have identified a decline in
entrants to degree courses for technical subjects such as engineering, mathematics and
sciences. This is projected to exacerbate the current shortage of European engineers and
technical professionals. I consider this to be a major threat to future European
competitiveness in global markets."

on young people making university career choices:(1 being most important)
1. School teachers can make maths and science subjects interesting and demonstrate their
relevance to today's and tomorrow's world
2. Universities should promote, in schools, science and engineering degree courses in a
more appealing and relevant way, and should demonstrate the range and value to
society of future careers available to science graduates
3. Industry leaders should promote, in schools, their achievements, and those of others in
their companies, providing exciting role models for future engineering, science and
technical graduates
4. Engineering and scientific professional associations and institutions should promote,
in schools, the wide range of career choices available to members of their professions,
demonstrating the relevance and value to society of each.
5. Government bodies should actively take part in lobbying professionals associations to
promote the wide range of career choices available to members of their professions,

leaders is secure
