Michael B Abbot, (English and Dutch)

C.Eng. From 1966 to 1996, Professor in Computational Hydraulics and subsequently Hydroinformatics at the post-graduate International Institute (IHE) in Delft. Also Professor of the Delf Technical University. Prof. Abbott introduced the subject Computational Hydraulics in 1969, which is now taught in most civil engineering departments of universities world-wide, and wrote the standard textbook on this subject, originally published in 1979, translated into Russian and Chinese, and republished in a second edition in 1998. From 1970, alongside the Delft activities, he set up and directed the Computational Hydraulics Centre of the Danish Hydraulics Institute (DHI), developing a new generation of modelling systems and therewith participating in many major hydraulics and coastal engineering projects world-wide. In 1977 set up and subsequently led the consortium constructing and exploiting the European Hydrologic System, which remains the preferred tool for most major hydrologic engineering projects today. Prof. Abbott introduced Hydroinformatics in a book of that name in 1991, as the application of advanced computation and communication technologies to problems of the aquatic environment. Major applications have included the Venice protection project and the (7.8 billion euro) traffic connection linking Sweden, across Denmark, to mainland Europe. These involved major issues of public participation and associated legislative aspects.

On these and other initiatives in oil and gas pipeline technologies, sea-state optimised ship navigation, nuclear power plant safety and broadband-distributed advice-serving systems Prof. Abbott has taken leading roles alongside many of the world's top construction companies. Awarded the Honorary Membership of the International Association for Hydraulics Research in 1999 and Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of Thessaloniki in 2002. Editor of the Journal of Hydroinformatics. Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
