One of the EIIL founding members Professor Michael Abbott, was a keynote speaker at the Corus de Magneet Symposium on 17th November. Michael provided an insight from a philosophical point of view, on the symposium's subject 'the energy crisis', to an audience of over one hundred young technical professionals from the UK and NL. Michael's fascinating talk began with a modern-scientific (thermodynamic) view of energy and its relation(as first established by Szilard) to information. It then extended this with its development in quantum chemistry and biology as described in popular-scientific terms by such as Monod and Magaleff and as closely related to Shannon's development of information theory. It then continued to a deconstruction of this complex of theories, identifying the ideological foundations of this complex in the manner established by Derrida while drawing upon Heidegger's insights into the essential
The talk concluded by bringing out clearly the consequences of such an analysis for the possible futures of mankind and of nature more generally.
Michael Abbott will elaborate on some of this analysis during the Winter School of the EIIL as part of the MIL programme in February. For further details of the Winter School click here . |
